Spark Plugs
Spark plugs are small devices responsible for igniting the combustion process of your car's engine. They are made to be durable to withstand high temperatures and constant use while your car is underway.
How Does a Spark Plug Work?
A spark plug is essentially a copper or nickel alloy conductor wire surrounded by a ceramic body. There is one spark plug for each of your engine's cylinders where the combination of fuel and oxygen are drawn together. The bottom side of the spark plug receives electricity from the car battery, which is kicked on through your car's ignition. When the ratio of oxygen and gasoline is pulled together, the top of the spark plug ignites this combination which combusts in the cylinder. The process is responsible for running your vehicle.
When to Change Your Spark Plugs
Spark plugs can sometimes last beyond 100,000 miles. However, they may begin to show signs of wear and tear around 80,000 miles or earlier. They can become corroded or rusty from moisture or simply worn down from constant use. You'll know your spark plugs need to be changed when you notice that your vehicle is having trouble starting or your engine begins to misfire.
